Different students from different backgrounds, cultures, and abilities all have their have a contribution to make to this learning community. Both as a teacher and an instructional designer, it is important to create learning experiences that enables everyone’s ability to participate.

Katherine Pisana

Katherine Pisana

Katherine Pisana, California, USA, Continuing, Higher, Adult, Educational Technology

I’m what Gilly Salmon (2002) calls the ‘Nomadict e-Moderator’: “E-moderators are as mobile as their students. Many are portfolio e-moderators, working for several educational institutions and providers, all over the world, at any one time. They work for institutions that provide them with the best support for their mobile working lives.

They have not only a highly developed awareness of the ways in which traditions of learning and expectations vary in different cultures but also the ability to work across discipline and levels of education… They can relate well to students without needing to meet with them. They focus on promoting the concepts of ownership of the learning process, active learning, independence… self-motivation and a level of autonomy.”

But, to put it more simply, I’m a teacher. I’m also a student. The only way I think we can be good teachers is to always be students. To consciously to be part of the audience so that we can remember why we’re here in the first place. To observe the world, to watch others’ journeys and vicariously learn through them, to digest and process information, turn it into knowledge… and eventually manifest wisdom.

Virtually Scholastic
In 2004 I fell into the world of educational technology while working for a university in the UK. This blog is a collection of my observations and a documentation of my evolution since that journey began. I’ll share discoveries with you of tools that I find interesting and relevant to my work.

I’ll provide feedback on how technologies add value (or not!) from a personal level as well as from a professional standpoint. I’ll also include the occasional story meant to ease the hearts of those in similar shoes (you’re not the only one!!).

Perhaps I’ll also inject an anecdote or two to stimulate the minds of those who are interested, and… of course, to inspire myself through the art of reflection.

Joss Winn

Joss Winn, UK, Higher Education, University, All Subjects

I work in the Centre for Educational Research & Development at the University of Lincoln. I focus on how technology is used in Higher Education; working with both staff and students on the use of technology for research, teaching and learning (and fun!).

Currently, my time is spent developing the Learning Lab as a useful set of web applications (blogs, wikis, forums, mashups) that are valued by the university's community of staff and students, are a pleasure to use and integrate well with social networking and other web services outside the university. I am also developing Lincoln Academic Commons, a hub for open source and open access related projects and information.

Previously, I worked for Amnesty International and the British Film Institute and am a qualified Film Archivist.

Narinder Bhatia

Narinder Bhatia

Narinder Bhatia, India, All Sectors, Educational Technology

Currenlty, managing CII-Shiksha, a non-profit operating in India and helping schools integrate technology into their teaching-learning process. I am a strong supporter of using Open Source in Education and have been professing the same in our Programme. A strong believer in the cause of 'Teachers' Empowerment' to help teachers perceive technology as a useful aid for their teaching-learning and not just a fad.

I have worked on various 'Technology in Education' projects in the past seven years and have understood to a large extent the bottlenecks of technology integration in schools. My mission is to 'simplify technology for education' so that more and more teachers adopt it and harness it properly.

Open Source and Web 2.0 has opened so many avenues that any passionate teacher could transform the teaching-learning process and be able to provide an enhanced experience for the learners.

I am happy to help teachers make a transition from 'classroom teacher to an e-teacher'. I am always working on ideas to make technology simplified for teachers so that they adopt it.
