Emily Douglas joined Battelle for Kids, a nonprofit that provides strategic counsel and innovative solutions for school districts, state education departments, and nonprofits globally, in 2009. She works with organizations on projects pertaining to comprehensive human capital change management, strategic compensation, process improvement, staffing, strategic planning, workforce development, staff evaluation, and organizational redesign efforts.

In 2013 she was selected by Workforce Magazine from a pool of international HR practitioners under 40 years old, from all industries, as an 'HR Game Changer.'

Emily has her Masters in Labor and Human Resources (MLHR) and her Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business and her Bachelor’s degree from Miami University. She has also obtained her Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB) and Senior Professional in Human Resources Certification (SPHR). Recently she completed a certificate from Cornell University pertaining to social media management.

As more districts and state agencies in the United States shift their focus to leadership and management of people, as we are seeing other successful ed-focused countries doing, more and more people will have questions about how to recruit, select, place, grown, reward, evaluate, and remove or retain, the right people! The purpose of this website is to give a glance into the real world of Elementary Education from the eye of an administrator. Many of my experiences were never studied in a text book or given in lecture.

No one ever mentioned that when a student threw up in my office I would be sick for a week or that a staff member would give an obscene hand gesture in a staff meeting. Who knew that parents when frightened or did not get their way could become shaming, disrespectful and abusive.

No one mentioned that when I anonymously made a difference in a child’s life that my heart would stop and tears would come to my eyes, or that I would witness gifted teaching beyond description or a community of families that worked tirelessly to help their children.

It is my hope that this information will support other educational leaders, help teachers, parents and force me to grow as a leader.

Brad Ovenell-Carter is assistant head of school at Island Pacific School, where he teaches English and philosophy to middle school students. He is currently writing a Master's thesis at Simon Fraser University on how best to use emerging web technologies to develop critical discourse in K-12 students.

Brad maintains a healthy skepticism towards web technology and is a little old-fashioned in his sentiments: he likes Homer and Milton; he think Greek and Latin are fine things to know; and, were it not for the squeaks, he would prefer a chalkboard to his Mac. Unless technology lets him do something he couldn't otherwise do with a stick in the sand, doesn't see much sense it.

Despite this, Brad feels that the only way to make fair assessments of Web 2.0 is to get dirty with it. He moved his whole school over to Google Apps in the fall of 2009 and over the past year has led his staff and students in experiments with wikis, blogs, instant messaging, and web conferencing. He blogs regularly on technology and schooling at A Stick in the Sand.

Michael Parent

My name is Michael Parent. I am happily married to a wonderful woman (Joanne) and we currently have three awesome, fun, raucous, and Star Wars-obsessed sons. We reside in Northern New Jersey.

When I was younger, I fancied myself a rock star; I played drums in many bands (I still do on my rare spare time) and even had the chance to perform as the opening act for Ace Frehley in 1994. You might have found me with the rocker crowd in high school; Metallica, KISS, Megadeth, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath were some of my musical heroes. Now I’m a bit more tame, but barely.

I never took my education seriously. I was an “easy C” student throughout high school (I spent my time playing in bands and rocking out in clubs like CBGBs - by the way I first hit the stage at CBGBs when I was just 15 and pimply) never bringing home books, studying, or reading. After high school I spent some time trying to be the rock star. I soon realized how much I hated that lifestyle after meeting Ace Frehley (thanks Ace! and some low-level music industry scum) so my next option was to go off to college. William Paterson College accepted me and I majored in Literature (somewhere along the line I discovered the world of books - the first real book I ever read was Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer) with a minor in Journalism. Now I wanted to be a writer (a la Hunter S. Thompson). When I realized the salaries were pitiful for reporters, I decided to teach literature - focusing on students who needed to discover, like I did, the wonders of great writing.

After teaching high school English for seven years, I made the move to administration. I am currently a high school administrator in Bergen County, NJ. I aim one day to be a Superintendent (or the Commissioner of Education if I ever make friends with a powerful politician!) or begin my own charter school.

Currently I am a member of Cohort XI at Seton Hall University, enrolled in the Executive Ed.D. program for Leadership and Management. I am fortunate to be with a cohort of like-minded administrators from around the country.
